Why is it so quiet here? - Den Nye By - 2025

Text by Josephine Marquard:

We gather a group of people to explore how we create a city as soft as a body, inspired by a poem the Danish poet Inger Christensen once wrote in 1969: a society can be so stony that everything is a single block, and the heart is completely in shadow, and the heart is almost silent until someone starts to build, a city as soft as a body.

We sit around a candle in silence. We eat grapes and pomegranates from each other's navels. We take off our clothes and move without music on old sheets. And all we discover is the hard city inside us. My hatred, my pain, my body of pain. I am afraid that you do not love me. I am afraid of failing.

We build the new city by discovering all the places where the old city lives in us. The new city and the old city stand side by side, negotiating with each other about the future.

The New City is the story of a group of people who try to take over an old slaughterhouse in Sydhavnen, and three weeks before are prevented by a mistake by the municipality of Aarhus. It is about the soft and the art and the culture and the life that is not recognized in a society where money has the highest value. It is about seeing dead bodies lying under the sheets in Gaza, while the whole world follows on Instagram. It is about choosing to believe in the future anyway. About taking the lead and changing the city together, even when the world seems lost and in deep crisis and powerlessness.

we will take the hard city and make it soft with our bodies.
